The two boys in my life...

Biscuit's 1st Birthday!!

It’s weird how someone could change your life completely be it habits or goal. I had always believe that fate had a way of making life interesting and miserable as well, it’s always a matter of how you would look back and think. As for me, I would say that it was destiny that had decided that these two boys would go through thick and thin with me and would be there for me no matter what happens to me. The “two boys” I am referring to is none other than my dogs Biscuit and Waffle.

I had known for sure that dogs are loyal, cute, cuddly blah blah blah... (The usual doggie stuff) But never had I expect to experience myself that they would change me. I mean, they are just dogs, how much of influence can they have? On the surface any typical person might say that to keep a dog comes with responsibility and never ending love. Believe it or not, these are just the tip of the iceberg, with responsibility comes with patient with patient comes with tolerant. The list would just go on and on like a butterfly effect.

I notice that when my two boys came into my life, they brought my family closer and helped mature my relationship with my girlfriend and I. There were occasions when we need comfort and the boys would lick us and stayed close by. There were also occasions when we were happy and the two boys would jump with joy with us. I remember once when I did badly for my test and was not in good mood, I went home and started throwing my tantrums around. The two boys came and lick me but I chase them away. Later I found out from my mum that even when I locked myself in my room, Biscuit stood by at the door while waffle lay at the corridor looking at the door.

From that day on, I had always tried to control my temper (though sometimes uncontrollable, but at least I did!!) And my parents also notice that I had become more patient (to my parents, girlfriend and the two boys). To me I don’t really treat my dogs as dogs but rather as my boys. I really love them and just thought of sharing this small experience with whoever reads it...

What are the effects of human activities such as development has on Singapore's natural biodiversity Environment?

MacRitchie Reservoir
Comprises only 4% of the original forest area in Singapore
On a hot sunny day in 1810, one tiger was preying on a barking deer for its lunch. As the tiger crawled cautiously toward the unsuspecting deer, the tiger accidentally steps on a brunch of a tree making a sound... The deer noticed it and immediately run for its live.

This you might say is an abstract from a documentary on Discovery Channel. But do Singaporeans know that in Singapore, tigers, leopard, clouded leopard, sambar and barking deer once thrive on this tiny island but are now extinct? This is the result caused by the establishment of Singapore as a colonial trading post in 1819 to present days of modern Singapore. And within a little over seven decades we have wiped out more than half the native freshwater fish, one-third of our birds and a quarter of the seed plants and mammals. They are all extinct now and will never come back. There are various activities that contribute to such devastation such as excessive land reclamation, leveling of lands for housing development, clearing the forest for industrialization etc. Once a sleepy island and now an Asian tiger, Singapore being a economic power house has its price to pay. Less than 5% of the original mangroves is left and mostly in the north of Singapore in a much degraded state.

Although there are parts of Singapore where the government has set it to be a Nature Reserves, our complex ecosystem that was once our rainforest is coming apart at the seams, slowly and steadily. This is because many Singaporeans are unaware of such situations (even the government). Some might even question if such utopia of nature even existed. Most Singaporeans have the idea that Singapore is a small concrete jungle island and the term “Garden City” is merely man-made and that such natural beauties does not exist in Singapore.

The Meaning of MY Life

"'Everybody knows they're going to die, but nobody believes it. If we did, we would do things differently,' Morrie said. 'So we kid ourselves about death,' I (Mitch) said. 'Yes, but there's a better approach. To know you're going to die and be prepared for it at any time. That's better. That way you can be actually be more involved in your life while you're living. . . Every day, have a little bird on your shoulder that asks, 'Is today the day? Am I ready? Am I doing all I need to do? Am I being the person I want to be?... The truth is, Mitch, once you learn how to die, you learn how to live... Most of us walk around as if we're sleepwalking. We really don't experience the world fully because we're half asleep, doing things we automatically think we have to do... Learn how to die, and you learn how to live.'" -- Tuesdays with Morrie ( I just had to paste this in because I felt that it was good)

Since young I have been experiencing the taste of success without any hardwork. When I was in my primary school and secondary school, I did not know what was meant as a be a hardworking student. In fact I did not even know how to study (Do you believe it?!?) To me study was just to open a book in front and read what was inside of it. All I know was to have fun and played as much as I could. Even during my O' Levels I did not study and just like this got into a polytechnic...

As most students would know, being in the polytechnic requires a certain degree of disipline. (Which I am lack of) And so I played on and on. But before I know it, I found out that my grades were dropping like flies ( I did not even bother to go for my Sub papers) It was till a point that I decided to quit school (do my parents a favour) and go on to the working society. When I was working, I often worked 12 to 14 hours straight just to earned enough to survive. It was tough and I didn't like what I was doing but who could I blame? No one... My parents had always let me do what I want and told me that I am old enough to decide whats good for myself and don't regret what I choose... I was working for 1 year and realise that I acheive nothing, I didn't like what I was doing and I learn nothing that I love. It was then I has this thought "I think I am wasting my life..."

I was called to do my National Service. Luck was on my side and I got posted to the Police (Doing national service in the police is more relax). During my time as a policeman I realise how realistic this society was. There were many incidents that made me realise that Singapore or rather the world is no fairy tale. And that in order for one to survive in this realistic society, one must have the required knowledge. And to do what one love, one must work hard to attain it, it does not come easy. There and then I enrolled into night classes to retake my O' Levels. I worked hard so that I could do what I love. I remembered, when I was young, I had always love to discover things, opening out electrical appliances to look what was inside and finding out reasons . My grandfather was an engineer and he often talked me about how fun being an engineer was.

After I got my results (which were slight better, I had to work and study...), I got into Nanyang Polytechnic. This was the first time I got to know what fun study meant. Never in my life have I thought that knowing stuffs can be so interesting (Some were boring though). I did better this time in my polytechnic.

To me the meaning of life is to find what you love to do. Some may find it earier in their life, some may find it later. Some may forgot halfway and some just know what they want. Ever since I got to do what I love, though there maybe ups and downs, my life have been more forcus because I have a goal... A goal that I love doing.... ( Though I sometimes need to remind myself to work hard)
